Resolutions Part 10: Saving Money
by:Pox
2012/10/01
I've decided to do a 12 step program this year. Each month, make a new lifestyle change until it all adds up at the end of the year. The key to success is to start small and have a plan. Follow along with me and make your life better! Or at least, more interesting.

Resolution 1: Eat Healthier
Resolution 2: GO TO SLEEP!
Resolution 3: Count Money!
Resolution 4: 59 Seconds
Resolution 5: Follow Politics
Resolution 6: Do Fitocracy Quests
Resolution 7: Get Six Pack
Resolution 8: Shhhh It's a secret
Resolution 9: No More Binging
Resolution 10: Saving Money
Resolution 11: Promote my Dumbass Site!
Resolution 12: A New Food Every Day!

GOAL 10: Saving Money

* Difficulty varies on your current lifestyle obviously...

So this is kind of embarassing maybe. I don't really have money saved for the future. I have a bunch of money that's just sitting around deflating in my bank account. Due to various unimportant reasons I have avoided placing money in some sort of investment / retirement fund. For one thing I work for myself so I don't get a paycheck delivered to me at home by my boss at the end of every day. Wait that's how paychecks work if I recall..yeah sounds about right...

One downside of this is that no one automatically steals my money to put it in some government program or fund. I never bothered setting up anything like that or forcing myself to put X amount per week / month into some account.

And I could have. So. I just cost myself money with my lazyness / stupidity. So this month I will look into my options and get set a few thousand dollars aside as a start.

I'm an artist so I don't ever plan on retiring or living a lavish lifestyle. Right now I'm living pretty much exactly like I'd want to live till the rest of my days.

I don't want a house.
I have no use for a car
I don't plan on fully reitiring
I'm pretty sure I don't want kids

Right there that's saving hundreds of thousands of dollars over a lifetime.

Tons of artists just die at their work because... heck it's what I did all the time before going to school and WHILE I was at school. No one ever needed to pay me to do this and if I was a billionaire I would still do it.

So yeah, I don't really give a crap about money other than I'm not an idiot (lol) and I know life goes sour some times and it's way better to have a large chunk of cash stashed somewhere than not, not to mention that if you don't invest your money you're just losing it to inflation every year. Plus, if you change your mind, it's better if you do it richer instead of poorer...

GOALS

1- Learn about financial options for self-employed people in Canada
2- Set aside 10% of yearly income in some sort of saving fund( plus 10% from the last 5 years too)

I gotta say that 153.22$ Will really help out when I retire in 560 years or however long it is I end up living. Probably longer but let's play it safe.

Side note: Why are people so eager to take on extra useless reponsibilities? If you don't absolutely need a house, why are you wasting hundreds of thousands on one? Not to mention you now have another job: Taking care of your stupid house 24/7.

Plus kids... Having kids does not make you happy. People think kids are a sitcom. You have your kids and then you get to watch your kids do wacky loveable stuff! No, your kids are YOUR OTHER JOB. That you can never quit. And have to pay thousands to work at. Children make you really happy once you get old, but by that point taking a shit without ending up in the hospital makes you equally happy.

I would only ever have kids if I was so financially comfortable that I could hire people to help out.

But yeah you other people have all the kids you want. Yes.

Ever notice how actors can't play teachers in movies or tv? They suck terribly at it.
